EGR Cooler Bypass

for Euro 6 VAG 1.6tdi and 2.0tdi engines.

clogged egr cooler img

The EGR cooler on the Euro 6 VAG 1.6 and 2.0 diesel engines (2015 onwards) is badly designed leading to a horrible habit of clogging up. The only sign of this is an EML (Engine Management Light) on the dashboard and when diagnosed gives the fault code P2002 which states DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) efficiency below threshold. The vehicle continues to perform just fine and there’s no other negative effect, at least short term - other than of course with an illuminated EML is an instant MOT failure.

We are still getting reports from clients that their garage is informing them this is caused by a clogged DPF so they must either replace or clean the filter. We’ll if it was a pre Euro 6 model they’d be correct, however, that’s not the case on these Euro 6 engines! What’s actually occurred is the EGR cooler has become clogged.

What is an EGR Cooler? The cooler on the EGR is there to reduce the temperature of the recirculated gases after combustion to allow for more efficiency of the following combustions.

Why does it clog? It’s a stupid concept, if you recirculate these dirty sticky gases with lots of carbon deposits in them they are going to clog up any small pockets such as in a cooler!

What fault does it cause when the EGR cooler clogs up? Well, it’s really simple, theres’ a temperature sensor that reads the temperature after the cooler to ensure the gas temperatures are reduced for the best efficiency of the following combustions when the cooler is no longer doing its job as efficiently as the manufacturer wants that temperature sensor picks up on this and flags the fault code P2002.

Can’t I just clean the EGR cooler? We’ve tried our Hydrogen chemical cleaning as well as physical removal to clean and it is possible to clean enough to remove the EML warning but it’s not a long-term or permanent fix. The problem is when the cleaners go through the EGR cooler they’ll find their way through the least restrictive route leaving the heavily clogged areas still blocked. It’s therefore only a matter of time before the areas that did get cleaned become restrictive again and the EML problem returns.

What options do I have then? Ultimately, it’s either a replacement EGR unit (costs anywhere from £1,200 to £2,400 depending on part quality and labour) or our unique remapping solution that as far as we are aware no one else worldwide can offer.

At just £379.99, or £499.99 with a recommended full engine carbon clean, we have successfully developed an ECU (Engine Control Unit) software solution that resolves this problem whilst keeping the EGR system fully intact and operational therefore unlike an EGR delete (which doesn’t resolve this fault anyway) legal.

What Our Customers Say

Faq

An average of 60-90 minutes but we recommend allowing for 2 hours.

Unlike just a clean (which will not resolve the fault) as long as your vehicle only has the P2002 fault code and is otherwise healthy your vehicle's engine will run perfectly immediately after the service and there are no longer-term negative effects.

As with any form of remap file writing, there is always a tiny risk of failure which can lead to difficulties but these can always be recovered. The question shouldn’t be if there are risks but if there was a problem how is it handled? You’ll be pleased to know all our technicians are highly skilled and trained using only the best equipment to protect your vehicle from the risks of damage during the ECU remapping process. Saying that we would not take any risks with your vehicle so for peace of mind UKCC Auto Techs guarantees you that all our technicians are fully insured.

Certainly not. We are a worldwide brand with CE-marked machines, operating in over 50 countries with 100’s of machines being used daily – never has there been an engine damaged from our engine carbon cleaning process. No competitor can give you peace of mind on that scale.

Yes. If you’ve been told or heard differently elsewhere you’re unfortunately been lied to. The good news is this only applies to manufacturer warranties (third-party warranties won’t be affected). Manufacturers make painstaking efforts to clearly state that unapproved modifications to any components will void their warranty so if your vehicle has a manufacturer warranty then you should think twice before having such a service performed on the vehicle.

Yes, because this is just a software fix it would be a simple process of installing the original file on the ECU. We permanently retain your original file just in case you ever require us to reverse the process.
