Aylesbury

Aylesbury is the county town of Buckinghamshire and is an ancient market town. There is evidence of a 4^th Century Iron Age Hill Fort in the centre of the town. William the Conqueror took Aylesbury Manor as his own and the town is listed as a royal manor in The Doomsday Book.

The town was declared the new county town in 1529 by Henry VIII, possibly to please Thomas Boleyn, father of Anne Boleyn. The town featured prominently in the English Civil War when it became a stronghold for Parliamentarian forces. The Cubit Engineering Works built motor cars in the town from 1919 to 1925.

Today Aylesbury is home to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, The Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery, The state of the art 1200 seat Waterside Theatre and was the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.
